Cristina Ricupero is an independent curator and art critic based in Paris. In 2018, she was artistic director of the Busan Biennale, South Korea, together with curator Jörg Heiser and guest curator Gahee Park. The Busan Biennale 2018 included 66 artists from all of the world having as a title “Divided We Stand” (September-November 2018).

 

Recently she was curatorial adviser for SeMA Bienniale Mediacity Seoul, South Korea (September-November 2016) and co-curator with Jörg Heiser of “Nuit Blanche Monaco’ (29 April 2016). She also co-curated together with Vanessa Müller for the Kunsthalle Vienna a group show called “New Ways of Doing Nothing” (June 26-October 12, 2014) as well as a large group exhibition “The Crime was Almost Perfect”, which took place at Witte de With in Rotterdam (January 24 April 27, 2014) then traveled to PAC-Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea in Milan (July 10- September 7, 2014). This group show featured over forty artists together with a publication. A first chapter on this research was titled “Suspicious Minds” and took place at Galeria Vermelho, Sao Paulo, Brazil (August-September 2013). She also curated together with Swiss-German artist Fabian Marti a group exhibition and publication called “Cosmic Laughter – timewave zero then what?” for the Ursula Blickle Stiftung, Germany (September-October 2012) and a major exhibition project, “Secret Societies”, for the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt (June-September, 2011), which toured to CAPC de Bordeaux (November, 2011-February 2012). A catalogue in German, English and French was published for this occasion.

 

In 2006 she was commissioned to cover the European section of the Gwangju Biennale in South Korea. She worked as a curator at NIFCA- the Nordic Institute for Contemporary Art in Helsinki from 2000-2005 and also as Associate Director of Exhibitions at the ICA in London from 2000 until 2004.

 

Cristina Ricupero has contributed to Frieze magazine and numerous catalogue publications. She has also been a frequent lecturer at the Faculty of Art and Architecture at NTNU, Trondheim in Norway, at Kunstuniversität Linz, Autstria, Sandberg Institute Amsterdam, HEAD Haute école d’art et de design, Geneva and most recently MIT program in art culture and technology, ACT, Boston, USA. She has given lectures but also has been developing a series of workshops that are usually thematic and related to exhibition projects she has done or is researching such as Secret Societies or The Crime Was Almost Perfect. These workshops usually last around 4 to 5 days and students are asked to develop and present individual projects at the end.
